U.S. Geological Survey Mendenhall Postdoctoral Fellowship on Modeling Coastal Aquifers and the Subterranean Estuary
Applications are invited for a U.S. Geological Survey Mendenhall Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (http://geology.usgs.gov/postdoc/2013) on reactive-solute-transport models for simulation of nutrient flux to the marine shore and through the subterranean estuary in shallow coastal aquifers. The research opportunity is described at http://geology.usgs.gov/postdoc/2013/opps/opp43.html. To apply the candidate will develop a research proposal, which is the principal application material, with assistance from the research advisors: Dr. John Colman (jacolman@usgs.gov), Dr. Kevin Kroeger (kkroeger@usgs.gov), and Dr. Charles Harvey (charvey@mit.edu). The successful candidate will work with these advisors to complete the proposed research. The home institution for the postdoctoral fellow will be the USGS Woods Hole Coastal & Marine Science Center on the campus of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.
Mendenhall Fellowships are 2-year appointments with excellent salary and benefits.
Mendenhall Fellows are typically granted a project budget appropriate to the scope
of research to be conducted.
The research topic addresses the critical and globally widespread problem of coastal eutrophication, associated with nitrogen transport from cultural development through shallow aquifers and the subterranean estuary into marine coastal waters. Because software for 3-D solute transport models with full chemistry has only recently become available, the research topic represents an exciting opportunity to advance understanding of this important environmental problem.
A wealth of existing data and ongoing field investigations on biogeochemistry, nitrogen transformations, and hydrogeology at numerous sites are available for the successful candidate, as are the considerable resources of the USGS for additional characterization of coastal geology and biogeochemistry. Please visit the above websites for additional program and application details.
